I had a great time at Rockfest. Here's how I spent August 10th.
I woke up later than I wanted to, and realized there was no way in hell I was going to meet Jeff at Jack-In-The-Box in time. So I give him and a call and he meets me at my house instead. I join Liz and Kenny in the back of Jeff's car (thanks for the ride, Jeff!), and we're off.
We arrived at the Columbia Meadows near St. Helens, OR, a little too late to see Dirty White Trash, the local band that apparently won a battle of the bands contest to open Rockfest. But we heard them while we were standing in line, and came to the conclusion that we weren't missing anything. Of all the bands in Portland, this was the one worthy enough to open Rockfest. Yeah, right. The band sucked. I wouldn't be surprised if sex or money had to do with why they opened. I've been to enough local shows (notably Syx and Strenuus) to know that the Portland scene has more to offer than this.
We got there before the next band, 10 Years, started their set. They reminded me of A Perfect Circle and Onesidezero, only lacking what made those bands unique.
Trivium was next, and they were pretty good. In Flames followed, and they were good as well.
ill nino was up next. I liked their first album, but the follow-up was pretty subpar. Fortunately, most of their set was from their first CD, so they were alright.
Then, Shadows Fall came on and fucking rocked.
Mudvayne followed. There were some girls (assumingly local strippers) who were hanging out in a VIP area to the left of the stage. Some of these girls had been flashing the crowd all day. But before Mudvayne's set, things got pretty wild. Stuff you'd see in a Girls Gone Wild video wild. Girls making out with other girls, etc. There was even a competition going on between the girls in the VIP area and a few of the girls in the audience! Thanks for the eye candy, ladies. Guns N' Roses' "Rocket Queen" was one of the songs playing while this was going on, and I'll remember this every time I hear it from now on. Mudvayne did a great performance.
After Mudvayne, it was time for the headliners... Disturbed. I knew they were going to be good, and they did not disappoint. Great set.
So all in all, a great day, and the highlight of my summer. Dirty White Trash was the only band that blew ass. Disturbed had the best performance of the day, with Mudvayne and Shadows Fall tied for second, because I don't feel like trying to decide which performance was better. Fuck that. They both fucking rocked, and let's just leave it at that.
-Scion light-up necklace thing (naturally, a lot of people had these on at night. I even swung mine in the air at random points in Disturbed's set)
-U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. pen
